Unveiling the eSIM Advantage in public transportation

Recently, a few new technologies have emerged that help to improve onboard public transport solutions and improve maintenance and availability.
One great solution, that has received less attention, is the eSIM technology finally being introduced in vehicle EDGE devices. Deal Comp supports eSIM in all its devices.

Traditionally, when changing the operator, SIM cards had to be removed from the device and replaced with new ones. Now, eSIM allows you to change the operator by using the data of the new operator in the fixed eSIM module in the device. Such remote and bulk access makes maintenance easier. There is no need to change the physical SIM card in the device, which is impossible in cases when there are many devices in use, access to in-vehicle devices is restricted and service interruptions in use are not accepted.

Flexibility and Scalability: With eSIMs, connectivity plans can be dynamically adjusted based on fluctuating demands, without the need for physical replacements. This flexibility empowers scaling operations efficiently, whether expanding to new routes or accommodating seasonal variations in passenger traffic.

No more physical SIM card: There are clear advantages when not using a physical SIM card. The eSIM is a chip soldered to the circuit board like any other component. The advantages are, that the eSIM module does need an unreliable socket connector as a regular SIM card does. Once the eSIM is soldered down onto the circuit board, it cannot be disposed of. The eSIM module cannot be removed intact from the circuit board, so it eliminates misuse and therefore is safer in this regard as well.

Enhanced Security: eSIM technology boasts robust security features, safeguarding sensitive data and communications against cyber threats. ITS solutions are fortified against unauthorized access, ensuring the data and communication integrity between the vehicle and landside systems.

Remote Management: The ability to remotely provision and manage eSIMs simplifies maintenance tasks and reduces downtime. One can remotely update connectivity profiles, troubleshoot issues, and monitor network performance, all from a remote-control interface.  Multiple service provider profiles can be stored in an eSIM, allowing international data service providers to enable cost effective global roaming.

In summary, adopting eSIM in EDGE devices with cellular modems improves system and operational reliability and reduces maintenance costs over time. Deal Comp can assist in this migration with our extensive eSIM support in all our devices, as well as enabling the use of international eSIM connectivity service providers.
